Pretty Polish

Nail polish is fun, funky, and fashionable but should not be worn all the time.  Polish can contribute to nail fungus.  The polish does not allow the toenail to breathe.  More moisture is trapped under the nail, providing a great place for fungal organisms to thrive.  Nail polish also causes pre-existing fungus to be more difficult to treat.  If you believe you have fungal nails, contact your podiatrist and schedule an appointment.

To keep your toe nails healthy and strong, keep them dry, short, and clean.  Synthetic socks also help to keep moisture off your feet. Use the proper tools and techniques when trimming your toenails. Here is a list of simple tips for toenail trimming.

1.Cut the nail straight across, not into the corners. It can be tempting to round the nail, but this is one of the worst things you can do when trimming, as it dramatically increases the chance of ingrown toenails.

2.Don't cut the nail too short. This is another cause of ingrown toenails. Make sure the nail is just slightly shorter than the toe itself.

3.Don't attempt to trim the nail with one big cut. Trimming bit by bit will make the task easier.

Once your nails are trimmed and cleaned, you may want to paint them up or remove old nail polish.  Avoid using nail polish remover often, as most nail polish and polish removers contain acetone, which can dry and damage nails.
