High heels contribute to knee and back problems, disabling injuries in falls, shortened calf muscles, and an awkward unnatural gait. If high heels are worn excessively, they may impair the foot's proper function. Because of this, it is important to understand the footwear choices we make everyday and the choices that we make that could limit the harmful affect of heels. Here are some tips to consider when picking a high heel:
- Don't wear a heel that is too tight fitting. Tight fitting heels only worsen the negative effects of heels.
- Alternate footwear between heels and an oxford style shoe or a flat. Carry flats in your purse so that you can switch shoes when you go out to lunch or run errands after work/activity.
- Determine the right heel for the situation. For example, a walking or comfort pump would be appropriate if you have a great deal of walking to do in your day.
- If your going to wear heels, we recommend one with a relatively wider heel and no more than 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in height.
Remember high heels can be stylish and comfortable at the same time, it's all a matter of picking out the shoe that fits.
